Over the past 10 years, Topigs Norsvin has genetically reduced boar taint in its lines by more than 50%. Today, depending on the circumstances, only 2 to 3% of the finishers score too high on human nose scores. That figure is 50% less than it was 10 years ago. Offspring from boars of the Nador boar program have even lower boar taint scores still.
Genetic selection has proven to be a perfect tool for reducing boar taint. If this is combined with fat analyzes, smelling scores, genomic information, and the application of the latest statistical models then the inheritance of boar taint can be reduced without negative side effects. Topigs Norsvin has included the reduction of boar taint in all of its lines, and this is a breeding target for not just for the terminal boar lines but the dam lines as well.
Breeding low boar taint animals is only a part of the solution. So far it has not been possible to eliminate boar taint through genetics alone. Nevertheless, Topigs Norsvin continues to breed for the reduction of boar taint, and over the coming years, steps will be taken to reduce boar taint even further still.
