Topigs Norsvin’ s philosophy emphasizes the importance of robust and strong pigs. This is reflected in the Early Phase Vitality observed in TN Duroc offspring. Their high pre-weaning survival rates demonstrate that they not only start strong but are also well-equipped for high performance during the finishing phase.
In the TN Duroc nucleus population, every piglet is weighed. Although this task is substantial, it is invaluable and serves as a key component of the renowned piglet vitality protocol. Since 2001, Topigs Norsvin annually weighs hundreds of thousands of piglets from its pure lines.
A resilience-focussed breeding program ensures the production of strong, robust piglets. These pigs are born with better-developed organs, such as the gastrointestinal tract, and have greater energy reserves, including higher glycogen levels in the blood and liver.
These factors create an ideal and healthy start. Right after birth, TN Duroc piglets are vigorous and active, allowing for a high nutrient intake. Their innate robustness reduces the likelihood of health problems, resulting in less work for caretakers. The pigs are self-sufficient and do not require intensive care.
Scientific on-farm trials have shown that pre-weaning survival rates for TN Duroc offspring are 2.3 to 5.9 percent point higher compared to offspring of competitor Duroc lines.
Scientific on-farm trials have shown that pre-weaning survival rates for TN Duroc offspring are significantly higher. The observed differences range from 2.3 to 5.9 percent point. See graph.
Pre-weaning survival of TN Duroc offspring is not only higher, but weaning weights are also higher. A recent trial conducted in the U.S. demonstrated that TN Duroc offspring weigh, on average 0.6 pounds more at weaning than another Duroc line, with weights of 13.8 pounds versus 13.2 pounds. This improvement contributes to enhanced performance during the nursery and finisher phases.
TN Duroc piglets are known for their high pre-weaning survival rates, a result of Topigs Norsvin’ s breeding program, which has prioritized piglet survival since 2001. This not only leads to more piglets being weaned but also reduces the workload during the farrowing phase. Furthermore, a strong start contributes to a highly productive nursery and finishing phase with minimal issues.
